Althyng Article Bored, looking
for something new to learn, tired of the same old projects or just want some
unique trim for your garb that you made yourself? If anyone of those items
sounds remotely familiar you might want to try some embroidery projects or
just try one to get your feet wet. Materials you will need include an
embroidery hoop, some embroidery floss (cotton is recommended for practice
and then move to silk thread), fabric (cotton or muslin), needles and a
pattern to trace.
Sources for patterns can include Celtic knot work, geometric, or floral
designs. When in doubt take a look at some of the tapestries or drawings of
clothing worn in the time period you are interested in. The colors of your
floss should be a color that would be used during the medieval times, avoid
the neon colored flosses and some pastels. Think about how threads were
dyed and what was used, can you reproduce those colors? Gold, silver and
other metallic threads were also popular. After choosing your pattern and
purchasing your supplies, trace your pattern onto the fabric using a #2 lead
pencil or a transfer pencil. Next select the colors of your floss. Put the
fabric on the hoop. Decide what stitches to use and begin embroidering.
Period stitches include laid work, bokhara couching, surface couching,
underside couching, patterned couching, stem stick, back stitch, chain
stitch, satin stitch, shading stitch, ten stitch, eyelet stitch, more
stitches are listed in the Known World Handbook. For beginners I recommend
the chain, satin, and back stitches. The Known World Handbook shows you how
to do each of the stitches as well. An additional resource is the Complete
Guide to Needlework, Reader's Digest.
This gentle art is great for taking to events and can be easily tucked into
your purse to keep your hands busy. It is also excellent for children 5 or
older who need something to do at events. If you have questions or would
like to learn the basics stop by one of the Althyng meetings or contact
Alexandra for more information. Alexandra can be reached at

POI Article Dancing has always
been a part of SCA life and dancing with fire adds that bit of danger that
we all crave. The art of Poi dancing that we have been practicing along
side of fencing/fighter practice is very self taught with the help of the
internet. All are welcome to come and play with us, we do not have any
loaner poi as of yet, but we are happy to share.

A May Day Festival Still in the
planning phases, but we are all excited and looking forward to a great
outcome. We know the demo will be held at waterfront park from 10am to 5pm,
and will include fencing, fighting, Poi, fundraising, Arts & Sciences
Displays and fun.
